The situation: According to the DEA, methamphetamine abuse seems to be expanding from Minnesota and Iowa into rural counties in western Wisconsin. Meanwhile, production of the drug in Wisconsin has declined steadily. Some methamphetamine is imported into the state by Mexican sources from the southwest border.

Meth in Wisconsin:

-- While many states in the midwest have seen an increase
in methamphetamine seizures by law enforcement,
Wisconsin has had none for several years.

-- Among those admitted to facilities for drug treatment,
just 1% said meth was their primary addiction. Nationally,
that figure is 6.3%.

-- -- Spending for substance-abuse treatment, prevention and research:
Amount    Per capita  Pct. of budget
Wisconsin        $52M $9.32 0.21%
U.S. average    $65M       $10.64        0.37%
